House Hunting

We went to Northern Virginia to start the next chapter in our housing adventures last week.

Our first apartment was so gross I actually called the health department to inspect the black mold in the basement. There were rats, very late night visits from drunken frat boys looking for the kegger next door, there were seriously CRAZY neighbors, and a robbery. Living there started an early morning habit of checking outside to see if our cars had been stolen, a habit that has only recently been broken as we are unable to see our cars from our current dwelling.

Our second apartment was right next to the freeway in Hartford, and blocks from a major fire station. There were so many sirens that we were sure Peter would grow up to be a fire fighter from his in utero siren exposure. I saw a mouse once, but it was still an upgrade.

The first house we saw in Virginia smelled like black mold, deal breaker! The second place we saw after talking to a realtor who had a listing for an awesome property that was "unfortunetly gone now," but he "had another property that would be great" for us. "Very spacious floor plan..."

This was the property!

The stained glass windows were lovely, but we just couldn't figure out what we could do in the Chapel besides throw wild parties.

Finally after seeing many, many terrible wallpaper displays and smelling many tragic smell combinations... (One landlord actually told us we could smoke inside his house, he "wasn't planning on ever living there." There was a bit of a language barrier, and he thought we were asking if we could smoke instead of trying to tell him the current tenant's haze of blue smoke was a deal breaker) ... we saw this place, and I could have cried. I didn't even have to ask if there was a rodent problem.
